THIS IS THE STRONGEST DEDICATED CHESS COMPUTER CURRENTLY MANUFACTURED IN THE WORLD. It is made by the famous Saitek firm, who took over the failed German company Mephisto several years ago, and whose brand-name they still use on certain models. The Master, playing at the standard 3 minutes per move average, has an ECF rating in the 181-193 range. The strongest computer ever made was the TASC R30, at 226 ECF (ELO 2408), but this is now a very rare second-hand item. The manufacturers have stopped improving chess computers to high levels. If you want the highest levels, you have to buy a programme for a PC (or possibly for a Mac), a PC with a modern high spec. These programmes, such as Fritz 12 and Rybka 4, play at about 280 ECF (2840 ELO), can beat grandmasters, and cost only about £40 incl. delivery to the UK. The Mephisto MASTER and FRITZ 12 can both be weakened to play at quite low levels, so if you want to play against them, you can begin at a low level, and gradually work your way up the levels.
